What's your take on DJ effects units are they important?

Well that’s up to you... its important to learn to walk before you can run so concentrate on your basic mixing first. Now I’ve got that off my chest I’ll drop the parental tone and get off my high horse to answer the question!!

Many DJs don't use effects units so depending on who you speak to they aren't important... you know there’s a but coming don't you... I do have to disagree! Personally I’ve always tried to inject as much of myself into my mixes as possible. So previously before this technology was available I was unable to alter the make up of the music I was mixing. DJ effects units changed that! Just by using basic filter, radio or reverb effects you can alter the sound of your tracks dramatically.. not to mention playing around with delay, loop samplers or even normal samplers. Personally if I were to go back to life without my effects units I’d feel cheated, they have become an integral part of my mixing.

There’s a lot out there to choose from so look around. My personal favorite is the Kaoss Pad, but beware a degree of skill is required to use this without looking stupid as its controlled by a touch pad. This isn't hard to learn, but like any DJ skills you will have to put in the practice before it comes. There are other effects units on the market so check them all out and see which one suits you best. You don't want to buy an effects unit your scared to use in the middle of a set after all... that could just be embarrassing!

Another argument for is that they are a pretty cool way to ease yourself into the recording studio environment. Most of the essential studio effects a producer would use to make their tracks are included in DJ effects units. Can you think of a better way to learn about these effects and how they work than playing with them while mixing? Drop me a line if you have any further questions about this [info at djtutorial com].
